What is the Global Innovation Tournament?

The Global Innovation Tournament (GIT) is an innovation competition that entails university students innovating based on a specific challenge, then capturing their solution on video. Last year was the first time teams from Malaysia participated in Stanford's Global Innovation Tournament. In Malaysia GIT was organized collaboratively between Alpha Catalyst Consulting and Warisan Global Sdn. Bhd.  Globally, nearly 1000 teams participated, from 31 countries. 3 teams from Malaysia were selected for the Semi Finals and one team from Malaysia actually won one of the 22 categories. This proves that Malaysian students are highly creative and innovative and are able to compete at an international level. Please go to http://unleashingideas.webjam.com/tournament/winners  to view the winning entries from last year.

In Malaysia, we did something a little different. We also organized a local challenge as many students we unable to participate in the global challenge  as it clashed with their exam schedule. To learn more about what happened  in Malaysia last year, please go to www.gitmy.blogspot.com or scroll down this page.

The Challenge

Here’s the GIT Malaysia challenge release from last year. One of the challenges from last year was how to use a Pencil to promote innovation in Malaysia.

Steps to Participate in 1MIT

GIT Malaysia Awards Ceremony @ UNIRAZAK

Here’s the winning entry from Soo Jin Yun. Her team won because the judges felt that they have created a tremendous amount of value with their action.

Keep the video simple. Capture your value/impact well. Whether it is about creating  a mental shift, new ideas or showing possibilities or fresh solutions to the challenge. Remember, the video is judged based on the idea and impact it has/will create; not on the quality of filming. Browse the web to get fresh inspirations! There are many other videos of GIT Malaysia on YouTube. Search for “GITMY2009”.

More info on 1MIT

How will the judging be done?

We shall be gathering a group of judges from diverse backgrounds and experience, from the corporate sector, government-linked agencies, and many others. Last year during Global Innovation Tournament our judges were from AirAsiaX, Bank Rakyat, Microsoft Malaysia, UEM Innovation Centre, Teras Teknologi, Warisan Global Sdn. Bhd., Youth Entrepreneur Malaysia & Uncle Bugs Creations.

All entries are screened by and then shortlisted by the organizers. The shortlisted 20- 30 videos are then judged by a panelist of invited judges from various corporate organizations. The categories of winners are also determined at the final judging. This will include overall winner, most viewed video, funniest, inspiring and many others.

How many videos can we submit?

Each team can submit as many entries as you want. Just remember to give each video a different title.

How many teams can I  be  a part of and must my team members be from the same university/college?

You can be in as many teams as you like and each team member can be from different university.

TIPS on Shooting the VIDEO from UCTI Students

1MIT Objectives

The purpose of 1MIT is to encourage Malaysian students to be innovative. The organizers want to expose you to the full process and experience of innovating. This includes having a short time period and limited resources. We want you to leverage on your imagination, network and technology. Winning is great however the experience garnered is even more valuable. We want participants to practice the 4Cs of Innovation (based on the Catalyst for Change Innovation Process) and hone the skills of innovating. Build  on this as you move onto other projects competitions  (There are many other competitions organized in Malaysia such as MSC-IHL MIBPC, Imagine Cup, SIFE etc.).

C1: Conception: Identifying the purpose of the innovation.

C2: Creation: Creating Breakthrough Ideas and Concept.

C3: Conversion: Selecting and Transforming the best idea into Action

C4: Connection: Connecting your solution to the users/target group.
